Stunning Mexican Wildlife

Mexico has many biospheres and is fortunate to have an amazing range of wildlife.

You don’t need to be an explorer or search the deep forests and jungles. In many cases, you can see some awesome creatures right in your all-inclusive hotel on the Riviera Maya!

Here’s a glimpse of what Mexico has to offer:

975 reptiles (lizards, snakes, turtles, crocodiles, iguanas, etc.) not to mention 430 species of amphibian, including the famous axolotl

Over 1,400 species of insect (probably many more and not including butterflies), including 549 classed as edible! (Only if you like grasshoppers, maguey worms and other things best left in the field).

Over 2,000 species of butterfly (about 10% of the world’s total). This includes the famous migratory Milkweed (or Monarch) butterfly.

A staggering 15,000 to 20,000 documented moth species from the very large ( the Black Witch Ascalapha odorata with a wingspan that can exceed 7 inches (18 cm), to the very small.

500 species of freshwater fish and over 1,000 marine fish.

500 species of mammals, including spider monkeys and jaguars.

For the not-squeamish, there are over 100 species of tarantula and some 400 species of scorpion (about 15% of the world’s number).

Over 25,000 species of plant, including around 800 species of cactus – plus over 150 species of agave, essential for tequila!

No matter what your interest, Mexico has wildlife abundance.
