Hi, I’m David Haggett.
I’m a travel writer and editor who has lived in the Yucatán Peninsula for more than six years, based in Mérida. Before that, I’ve lived and worked in several other parts of the world, including Singapore, South Africa, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom, and I’ve visited well over 60 countries for work and for pleasure.
Over the years I’ve written hundreds of articles on travel and other subjects, drawing on first-hand experience rather than guidebook summaries. My focus with Wonky Compass is simple: to share grounded, practical information about traveling in Mexico, especially the Yucatán, that you can use whether you’re planning your first trip or returning for a deeper visit.
My passion for wildlife enables me to add a new dimension to any visit to Mexico – where and how to see the amazing and exotic natural history.
Before settling in Mexico I worked in sales and technology, lived on a game farm in South Africa, and spent several years in Asia. I’ve also written non-fiction books on natural history and a number of other topics, and I continue to write about places I’ve spent time in firsthand.
What you’ll find here are travel guides, itineraries, and tips based on actual experience — not copy-and-paste tourist blurbs. Most of the destinations covered have been places I’ve explored in person, and where I think a local perspective makes a difference in what’s actually worth seeing and doing.
If you have questions about travel in Mexico or want clarification on anything here, feel free to get in touch.
When not writing, I enjoy exploring the Yucatan with my wife and daughter. See our family story here.
I’m also the author of DavidHaggett.com, a travel blog from when I lived in Africa and Malaysia. I’ve also been a contributor to various travel publications.
