The Yucatan Peninsula is flat – there are no rivers or lakes. It’s an enormous limestone plate, with many caves, cenotes, and aquifers running beneath it. This has created a wonderful system of cenotes across the peninsula.

These cenotes or sinkholes can be underground, open, or semi-open and have become lucrative tourist attractions. However, in bygone centuries these same cenotes were often critical to the very survival of the Mayans.

Cenotes featured heavily in the life of the Mayans and were often linked to what we now see as restored Mayan ruins.

You must visit at least one Mayan Ruin!

The Mayan ruins across this vast area of flat limestone provide a unique insight into the lives of a civilization that has disappeared. Many archaeological sites are open to the public and have been restored with great care.

Over the years, many of the ruins have stopped visitors from climbing the taller structures. There are still a few that permit visitors to climb. The views from the top of the pyramids or major temples can be amazing due to the flat terrain. Don’t leave it too late to visit one of the amazing sites.
