Less well-known are its cenotes. These are sinkholes, with crystal-clear water for swimming. Some are above ground, while others are in underground caverns, adding an element of adventure!

From the tropical rainforests of Chiapas to the pristine coral reefs of Cozumel, this country boasts an astonishing array of animal species.
In the jungles of Mexico, you may spot elusive jaguars and ocelots stealthily roaming through dense foliage. If you’re in Nayarit, you might even catch a glimpse of the amazing flocks of Military Macaws.
One bird that is much easier to see is the flamingo. In the Yucatan, there are a few places you can see them. Between December and February, you might catch sight of literally thousands of flamingos at Celestun. But, depending on where you are, look out for hummingbirds, parrots, and a host of gorgeous tropical birds.
For marine enthusiasts, diving into the crystal-clear waters off the coast reveals a whole new world teeming with life. Swim alongside graceful sea turtles as they glide effortlessly through underwater caves or marvel at schools of colorful fish darting around multihued coral reefs.

I couldn’t resist adding a section about Mexican Luche Libre, also known as Mexican wrestling, under Mexican Culture as it is so ‘Mexican’!
Understandably, it may not be top of your reasons to visit Mexico but it’s good fun when you’re here.
When we were staying in Ajijic, we made a trip to Guadalajara just for the Luche Libre. It was great fun!
This high-energy sport combines athleticism, showmanship, and tradition in a way that is both captivating and entertaining. Far more so than I was expecting.
The first thing that strikes you about Luche Libre is the colorful masks worn by the wrestlers. Each wrestler has their own distinctive mask design which not only adds to the spectacle but also helps to create an air of mystery around them. These masks are considered sacred by the wrestlers and are never removed during a match.
Watching a Luche Libre match is like watching a live-action comic book come to life. The acrobatic moves, gravity-defying flips, and impressive aerial maneuvers performed by the wrestlers had us on the edge of our seats. The intense atmosphere in the arena adds to the excitement as fans cheer for their favorite luchadores (wrestlers) with thunderous enthusiasm.
But it’s not just about the in-ring action. There’s also plenty of drama outside of it – often when one of the wrestlers gets hurled from the ring. The fighting may continue outside the ropes, with chairs slung about, giving the audience a literal ringside seat to the action. For those in the front row, sometimes too much action!
It’s an experience unlike any other where athletic prowess meets theatrical flair. If you’re looking for some unforgettable entertainment during your visit to Mexico, be sure to catch a Luche Libre match! It is great fun.

We’ve Found The Police are Friendly and Helpful
In my experience, this friendliness extends to the police. In every interaction I’ve had with them, the police have always been helpful and friendly, despite a general lack of English (or Spanish from me, if you look at it from their perspective). That includes driving the wrong way down a one-way street, having a car accident on the highway, and generally getting lost. Among others!
In the Yucatan, many of the police you’ll are tourist police. These are ‘proper’ police but with a focus on keeping tourists safe and out of trouble. (I’ve not been foolish enough to have done anything to incur their wrath, so I can’t say what happens if you’re caught with drugs or misbehaving. Nothing nice, I would imagine.)

One of the best things about visiting Mexico is the opportunity to buy unique and fascinating souvenirs. Whether you’re looking for traditional crafts or trendy fashion accessories, Mexico has it all.
When it comes to choosing the best souvenirs from Mexico, you’ll be spoiled for choice. From bustling markets to quaint artisanal shops, there’s a wealth of options to explore.

Over the years, we have bought a large number of the multi-colored pompom ornaments made in Oaxaca, although we have bought them in Tulum, Puerto Morales, Mexico City, and elsewhere. Colorful and lightweight (important for air travel) – these are always a great buy if you’re not sure what souvenirs to buy in Mexico!
For those who love fashion, Mexican silver jewelry is a must-buy souvenir. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are unparalleled. You can find exquisite pieces adorned with colorful gemstones or intricately carved designs that reflect the rich heritage of Mexican silversmithing.
Another popular item among tourists is the iconic Mexican sombrero. If you’re looking for something more subdued, try the jipi japa Panama-style hats made from a type of palm tree. These are sold throughout Yucatan but if get a chance visit the small town of Becal halfway between Campeche and Merida and watch them being made.
What are the best souvenirs in Mexico? That depends on your wallet and who you are buying for. But the best part about buying souvenirs in Mexico is supporting local artisans and contributing directly to their livelihoods.

You may have seen negative press about Mexico and drug cartels. The news industry thrives on bad news. However, you certainly need to confirm the area you are going to is safe. Check with these agencies:
US Government Travel Advisories
In these reports, you will see many areas mentioned as threats. And rightly so. We would certainly not suggest visiting such areas (although we have friends who live their day to day live in some of these places).
Knowing where to avoid makes common sense. But Mexico is a huge country. There is no reason to visit the places warned against. Mexico has a booming tourist industry, with over 40 million international visitors expected in 2023. And there are many places where you can go and have a superb relaxing holiday.
The Government has invested a lot to protect your safety
The Mexican government has pumped a lot of money and resource into making sure that the more popular tourist areas are safe – they are keen to protect their investments and want you to feel safe. This is one of the reasons to visit Mexico – peace of mind.
For example, Quintana Roo is forecasting over 13 million overseas visitors in 2023. You can be very sure the tourist industry will work hard to keep them safe!
The same is true for Puerto Vallarta. With a booming tourism industry, much effort is being put into keeping tourists safe.
For this reason, if you are planning on visiting the Yucatan or Quintana Roo, which are the most popular Mexican destinations, you shouldn’t be overly concerned about safety. A similar story can be told about other major tourist spots.
However, wherever you go, exercising common sense is important.
Don’t forget – statistically, Merida City in the Yucatan is not only one of the safest cities to visit in Mexico, it’s actually the second safest city in the whole of North America! (Quebec is the safest).
Second only to Merida is Puerto Vallarta for safety in Mexico. On the Numbeo crime rankings Puerto Vallarta ranks 35.3/100 for crime and 64.7/100 for safety. Both these numbers are well below cities in the US.

You will probably have to stay with your vehicle until an insurance assessor arrives. Don’t leave the scene until the police say you can – this includes fender benders.
