About Us

Who are we?

Hi, we’re Wonky Compass! As a family, we’ve always enjoyed traveling.

Why Wonky Compass? We know where we want to go but somehow often end up somewhere else – mostly by choice.

I’m David, joined by Tabitha and Lesley.

We’re from the UK but we’ve lived overseas, on and off, for the past 30 years. The countries we have lived in as a family have included the UK (obviously!), Singapore (7 years), Malaysia (9 years), South Africa (12 years), and now Mexico (4 years).

I only count countries where we have lived for more than 6 months, otherwise, the list would include Luxembourg and Kuwait.

Partly due to my previous job, I’ve visited 69 countries, but Lesley and Tabitha have clocked up an impressive 30.

I was dragged off to Malta for nearly 3 years when I was 6 months old and then to Singapore when I was 11. (My father was in the Royal Navy.) So travel was ingrained at an early age!

When she was 6 months old, Lesley and I repeated my parents’ mistake by taking Tabitha with us to Sri Lanka. From then on, she too had the travel bug as she was dragged around Asia, Australia, and southern Africa – and a trip to Disneyland Florida. (That was more for Lesley and I, if we’re honest!)

We love Mexico!

We’ve been coming to Mexico for nearly 12 years. We’ve spent months in Ajijic, on the edge of Lake Chapala near Guadalajara and several months off and on in the Playa del Carmen area. This has  given us a broad view of different Mexican regions and cultures – which is why we love it!

Four years ago we moved to Merida, which is a great base to explore all things Yucatecan.

We’re still exploring Mexico and following our all too Wonky Compass to see where we end up next in Mexico!

Why our blog is different

We probably should have been writing travel blogs from the time we left the UK in 1988. But we didn’t. We were living and exploring places at that time that many people didn’t view as holiday destinations.

Since being in Mexico, we’ve wanted to learn more about the country and places to visit. So – like you are doing now – we checked out various blogs and videos.

We found many of them to be extremely useful. But we also found a number that were either obviously written by people who had never been to the places we read about or who had views very different to our own once we visited the places they wrote about.

People are different. Lesley and Tabitha love cilantro. I do not. If I forget to say ‘sin cilantro‘ with my food order, I can be seen scraping off annoying shreds of this evil-tasting herb.

Other people’s views of destinations are much the same. Bucerias (in Nayarit) is a  very popular destination with holiday makers from the US.  We didn’t enjoy the pushy market sellers or crowded, potholed streets. That’s just us.

Some rave about the culinary delights of Puerto Vallarta – but when you check out the recommendations, the restaurants are often expensive. Make no mistake, there are great places to eat but you can choose between reasonable and expensive – like we do.

So, our blog is based on our visits, experience and our likes and dislikes.

Please enjoy our real experiences and we hope our information helps you have an awesome holiday in this gorgeous country!

I've visited over 60 countries and lived in six, across four continents. I love traveling and sharing my exploits.

After spending months in places like Playa del Carmen and Ajijic (near Lake Chapala, Guadalajara), my family and I have been living for the past four years in the Yucatan and enjoying this fabulous part of Mexico.

I've written many travel blogs for other travel sites over the years before starting Wonky Compass. I have three books published on Amazon.
